With the NOP Application Submission Deadline scheduled to close on March 5, 2019, the final stretch of outreach visits was conducted in Lahore and its surrounding areas from February 6-18, 2019. Over the course of 2 weeks we visited the neighbouring cities of Okara, Sahiwal, Kasur, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Sheikhupura reaching out to a total of 1800 students in 22 colleges.

Famous for its sugarcanes, Okara was the NOP Team’s first stop where 4 colleges were visited and students were educated on the Programme. Mr. Rao Muhammad Riaz, Assistant Professor Government College, Okara, praised the session and stated that the motivational aspect of the presentation would definitely help students create good concrete future plans. Mr. Munir Ahmad, Assistant Professor Divisional Public College, Okara, too remarked positively at the disseminated information.

Sahiwal was visited next. Here too students were given information about the NOP Scholarship and how they can apply. Mr. Muhamamd Rafiq, Vice Principal Divisional Public College, Sahiwal, thanked LUMS for bringing NOP and the opportunities with it to the college’s doorstep.

After Sahiwal, the NOP Team was hosted at Gujranwala. Specific focus was given to Pre-Medical and Pre-Engineering students educating them about the wide variety of fields offered at LUMS. Ms. Wahida Abbas, Assistant Professor Government College for Women, Gujranwala, expressed her admiration for the passion with which LUMS reaches out to the country’s talent.

The NOP Team then headed on to Kasur, the city of the famed Sufi philosopher and poet, Baba Bulleh Shah. Despite the torrential rain, it was heartening to see ambitious students willing to learn and understand the varied opportunities available to them at LUMS. Mr. Farhan Mudassar, Campus Administrator Punjab College, Kasur, praised the information session conducted and suggested that LUMS should invite student counsellors and educate them on the NOP so they too may spread the message of accessible quality education in their communities.

The hometown of Allama Iqbal, Sialkot, was the next stop in the tour, where educators and students warmly welcomed the Team. The respective students at the resident colleges were informed of the facilities at LUMS, especially the dedicated focus on research. Ms. Saima Amin, Assistant Professor Government College University, Sialkot vowed to ensure students under her tutelage would certainly apply for the opportunity of a lifetime.

The last city visited outside of Lahore was Sheikhupura. Once again students were walked through the process of the NOP and questions on the NOP Online Application process were answered by the Team.
Within Lahore, LUMS was contacted by the CARE Foundation who wanted an information session conducted for its students from various colleges within the city. The diverse group were given guidance on the NOP process and the students were actively motivated to think outside the box, take paths less travelled and never be afraid of pursuing dreams.
In conclusion, the various NOP sessions in the multiple cities are sure to bring applications from talented students spread out across Pakistan.

As part of the programme, the NOP outreach team visits different areas in Pakistan to seek out talented students. During an outreach visit to the Swat Valley from October 7–11, 2019, the team visited 10 colleges and held information sessions with approximately 900 students across the cities of Swat, Chitral, Timergara, Kuragh, Mingora and Saidu Sharif.

The presentations highlighted the state-of-the-art facilities available at LUMS, as well as the University’s focus on producing cutting edge research. The team also talked about the faculty members – the majority of which have doctorate degrees from the finest institutions around the world. The team also shared an overview of the Programme, as well as the application process. This visit marked the first time that Outreach had been extended to the small town of Kuragh – 2.5 hours away from the main city of Chitral, where the team also met the students of Aga Khan Higher Secondary College.

The team was pleased to note the enthusiasm of the students, and their commitment to education. All students had scored more than 80% in their Matric examinations. The feedback received was very positive. Jaffar Ali, Admin Head Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Chitral, stated that the session held was excellent and would surely motivate students to pursue their higher education goals. The Outreach efforts in the Swat Valley were a success overall, and the team is confident that promising applications will be received from this area for the 2020 NOP Summer Coaching Session.

The National Outreach Programme (NOP) at LUMS is a prestigious scholarship that aims to educate brilliant individuals from underprivileged backgrounds from across Pakistan. As part of the programme, the NOP outreach team visits different areas in Pakistan to seek out talented students. During an outreach visit to Azad Kashmir from September 23–25, 2019, the team visited 8 colleges and held information sessions with approximately 600 students.

Scenic rivers, serene valleys and lush foliage is what characterises one of the northernmost provinces of Pakistan – Azad Kashmir. However, it is not just natural beauty that makes this province so special, but also the high literacy rate and talented students that reside within. The outreach team kept Muzaffarabad as its base and traversed to Bagh and Rawalakot.

Despite the prevailing political situation, the morale of the students was extremely high, with many eager to learn about the opportunities offered by LUMS. After a detailed presentation on the Undergraduate programme offerings at the University, an overview of the process of applying to the NOP Summer Coaching Session was given, followed by Q&A sessions where students obtained more information on the application process, as well as LUMS as a whole.

The feedback received from educators was very positive. Azhar Shah, Principal of the Chinar Degree College Bagh, praised the unique opportunity offered by the LUMS NOP for talented yet underprivileged students. Dr. Nasir Ali, Head Lecturer at the Read Foundation College of Science, Muzaffarabad, remarked positively at the information session held and commented that it would greatly benefit the students of his college.

Every year the National Outreach Programme (NOP) Centre plans its annual outreach with the objective of not just educating bright yet underprivileged students across Pakistan, but also promoting the message of higher education. Students are informed of how they can apply to the NOP Summer Coaching Session and how that places them on the right track for eventual admission to the LUMS Undergraduate programme on 100% scholarship. In lieu of the same, visits are planned by the outreach team in all major provinces and cities of Pakistan, reaching out to the government and semi-government institutions.

This year, the NOP team kicked off their outreach visits from Abbottabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Founded by Major James Abbot, the city is a historic one and boasts an array of educational institutions. The team conducted visits in Haripur, Mansehra, Shinkiari, Batrasi and Murree, visiting 20 colleges and reaching out to more than 500 students from September 23-27, 2019.

Some of the highlights in this first stint were the visits and presentations made to cadet colleges, where students from various ethnicities and cultural heritage were found. Furthermore, walk-in sessions were also conducted in colleges where prior appointments had not particularly been set – seeing the stellar reputation of the LUMS NOP, these colleges warmly welcomed the team and facilitated the session.

As with all such visits, a process of feedback was maintained with all the focal persons of the colleges visited. Lubna Adeem, Assistant Professor at the Government Postgraduate College for Women, Haripur commented that the session was extremely useful and would surely help students avail higher education opportunities. Mr. Zubair Ahmed, Vice Principal at the Peace College, Mansehra, praised the session and pledged his support to the NOP cause. Mr. Ibrar Shah, Principal at the New Shaheen College Shinkiari, lauded the efforts of LUMS in reaching out to talented students in the area.

With the high quality of students found in this region LUMS hopes to see a number of brilliant applications for the NOP Summer Coaching Session this year.

The National Outreach Programme Team as part of their outreach visits reached out to various students in Mianwali and its surrounding areas including Dera Ismail Khan, Bhakkar, Khushab and Sargodha. The visit took place from October 21 - 25 and a total of 14 colleges were visited with more than 700 students reached out to.

Students were informed of the wonderful opportunities available for talented students through the National Outreach Programme scholarship and were guided on the application process. Question and Answer sessions were also held where the audience got a chance to inquire about the admission criteria and the LUMS facilities that will be available to them.

Feedback obtained from the educators in the region was very positive. Ms. Ruqia Khatoon, Principal at the Government College for Women Mianwali, thanked the team for visiting their college and assured them that she would definitely motivate her students to apply. Similarly, Ms. Sadia Naz, Deputy Head at the Daanish Girls School Mianwali, praised the informative nature of the session and stated that student’s under her tutelage were eager to submit their application for the NOP Summer Coaching Session 2020.

Peshawar, the cultural and financial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is home to some of the most famous archaic landmarks and traditional delicacies. Not only are the people exceptionally hospitable but are always ready to lend a helping hand to all those who visit. The National Outreach Programme team visited the cities of Peshawar, Charsadda, Risalpur, Nowshera, Kohat and Mardan from October 21 to 25, 2019 to spread the word about the scholarship. The team visited 16 colleges and reached over 600 students.

During the information sessions that took place, students were informed about the National Outreach Programme (NOP) scholarship and were walked through the state-of-the-art facilities at LUMS. During the Q&A sessions that followed, the eligibility criteria for the NOP Summer Coaching Session (SCS) as well as the application process were discussed. A highlight of this visit was coming across those students who had attended the NOP Summer Coaching Session in previous years and were extremely passionate about motivating their peers for the same.

The College Administrators appreciated the NOP team for reaching out to them and sharing information about the scholarship. Ms. Shahana Raziq, Administrator, Islamia School for Girls, Peshawar said that the session was extremely informative and would benefit the students of her institution. Mr. Mirza Azad, Administration Head, Punjab Group of Colleges, Nowshera remarked that the NOP can prove to be a life changing opportunity for students and vowed to motivate his students to apply for the scholarship.

The National Outreach Programme (NOP) team at LUMS held an Open Day in Quetta on November 6, 2019, which was attended by over 1,000 students, parents and educators. Although similar events have been conducted in other provinces by LUMS, this marked the first of this scale in Balochistan.

Established in 2001, the NOP is a prestigious scholarship that aims to educate brilliant individuals from underprivileged backgrounds from across Pakistan. The NOP team sets out to visit a multitude of schools and colleges in cities, towns and villages all over the nation to inform students about the NOP and how they can make use of this life changing opportunity. To date, NOP scholars have come from 122 cities, making it one of the most diverse scholarships in the country.

In instances where direct visits are not feasible, indirect outreach methods are used. Such was the case in the province of Balochistan, where the prevailing security concerns made direct outreach visits impossible. Consequently, educational partners such as the Balochistan Education Endowment Fund (BEEF) and Balochistan Residential Colleges were sent programme details and guidelines for their students, to ensure that talented students from the Province were made aware of this Programme and would apply.

The NOP team reached out to various stakeholders scattered across Balochistan to gather their feedback about holding a session in the Province. The team contacted BEEF initially and a feasibility study was made in terms of the timeline, venue and expected participation of the session. BEEF initiated conversation with, and sent out invitations to, multiple schools under its helm. The on ground arrangements were finalised and volunteers were requested from the Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS), to provide assistance during the event.

The Open Day consisted of multiple sessions, with the first kicking-off at 9:30 am. The jam-packed audience was given a presentation about LUMS, its facilities and an overview of the NOP. Participants were also given an overview of the application process for the annual NOP Summer Coaching Session, as well as the timeline for LUMS admissions. All sessions were interactive, and the floor was opened to Questions and Answers at the end of each presentation. Participants asked detailed questions about policies at LUMS and the NOP Scholarship, and also encouraged the team to visit other major cities in Balochistan.

Acknowledging the collaborative effort between multiple internal and external stakeholders which made the Open Day a huge success, Manager NOP Centre, Ms. Shandana Mehdi said, “Mr. Rashid Khan, Ms. Shamshad Kousar, and the entire team at BEEF who communicated with resident schools and circulated collateral on various platforms, were immensely helpful in making the event a success. Mr. Khan’s motivational speech during the session too added depth and gravity to the event. Mr. Sameen Khan, Manager Student Affairs at BUITEMS, provided unmatched hospitality and assistance. Mr. Zia Khan, through Quetta Online, was instrumental in mobilising students. The LUMS community also provided us valuable support; Ms. Hiba Zakai, Manager Campus Climate Unit, LUMS, connected our team with BUITEMS and fostered cross-university collaboration; Syed Izzat Ullah, a LUMS PhD student, helped connect us with over 30 schools and various partners and the Marketing and Communications teams at LUMS ensured that the event is well marketed with the appropriately designed communication.”

The National Outreach Programme (NOP) Centre team set out to visit the cities of Multan, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan and Khanewal in mid December. They visited a total of 15 colleges and interacted with 700 students in order to give them vital information about the NOP Scholarship.

After the NOP team provided details on the facilities available at LUMS, the benefits of the Scholarship and the application process for the NOP Summer Coaching Session, an engaging Question and Answer session took place. Students were eager to know more about LUMS and the admission process and inquired about the academic disciplines being taught at LUMS as well as their future prospects in terms of careers.

As always, the feedback from the students and teachers was extremely positive. Mr. Muhamamd Hashim, Placement In-Charge at Daanish School (Boys), Dera Ghazi Khan, praised the informative nature of the session and vowed to motivate his students to apply. Similarly, Ms. Siddiqa Bukhari, Student Counsellor at the Daanish School (Girls) Dera Ghazi Khan, thanked the LUMS NOP team for visiting and hoped that like previous years, bright students would again apply to the NOP Summer Coaching session 2020. Mr. Muhammad Imran, Principal at Britain International College, Multan, exclaimed that the NOP was a life-changing opportunity for students and applying would be extremely beneficial for students under his tutelage. Dr. Anwar Niazi, Vice Principal at the Government Post Graduate College, Layyah, also expressed similar views and said the session was highly useful for students.

The National Outreach Programme (NOP) team headed to Karachi, Hyderabad and other cities in Interior Sindh including Mirpur Khas, Jamshoro and Tando Muhammad Khan from November 18-23, where they visited 14 colleges and reached out to more than a thousand students.

In Karachi and Hyderabad, information sessions were held where students were informed about the NOP Scholarship as well as the NOP journey towards LUMS Admissions. In Jamshoro the NOP team also met up with Dr. A. N. Samoo and his team at Thardeep Rural Development Programme (TRDP). TRDP is an NGO which runs initiatives for rural development in the region, and with their collaboration sessions were held with partnering colleges.

A major highlight of this visit was a fantastic session held in collaboration with the Department for Human Resources (DOHR) in Tando Muhammad Khan where more than 400 students participated from surrounding towns and villages. Out of the attendees, half were female and more than 60 were from various minority groups. DOHR provided exceptional logistical support in terms of disseminating collateral to prospective attendees and preparing for the session. Students were again briefed on the NOP process and were motivated to not just apply to LUMS but to widen their horizons as a whole in terms of pursuing their ambitions. Mr. Muhammad Ali, Head of DOHR and his team showed commitment towards promoting higher education in the province and provided unwavering support and warm hospitality to the NOP team in Tando Muhammad Khan.

Overall the feedback received from educators in the region was extremely positive with Professor Syed Owais Shah, Head Lecturer at Adamjee Government Science College Karachi extolling the benefits of the session for his students. Mr. Hammad Khalid, Manager Student Development at The Citizen Foundation College Karachi thanked the LUMS team for visiting their students and stated that the session would prove very helpful for applicants wishing to apply to the NOP Summer Coaching Session.

Mr. Syed Khalil Hussain, Principal at the F.G. Degree College, Hyderabad praised the efforts made to reach out to the underprivileged students in Sindh who displayed talent. Mr. Sanaullah Abro, Principal at GBHSS Society Jamshoro hoped that LUMS would continue to visit Sindh and inform students about the benefits of the NOP Scholarship.
