Dr. Muhammad Shehryar Shahid is a tenured Associate Professor at Suleman Dawood School of Business at LUMS. He holds a PhD in entrepreneurship from the University of Sheffield, UK. Prior to his PhD, he completed his MBA from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and his bachelor’s degree from Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering and Technology (GIKI), Pakistan. He has completed his certifications in Participant-Centered Learning (case method) and case writing from Harvard Business School and Ivey Business School. Dr Shahid is also a certified entrepreneurial coach from Saarland University, Germany.    


He is an active researcher who regularly publishes in top-tier journals, such as Entrepreneurship and Regional Development (ERD), World DProfilesevelopment, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research (IJEBR), Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Journal of Cleaner Production, Socio-Economic Review, Review of Social Economy and Technology Forecasting and Social Change. His current research agendas focus on four key areas – informal entrepreneurship, technology adoption amongst MSMEs, frugal innovation in resource-constraint environments and female entrepreneurship in the context of developing countries. Dr Shahid is particularly fascinated by the idea of exploring the cognitive, sociological, and developmental sides of entrepreneurship and how entrepreneurship can lead to sustainable development. He has presented his research work at leading conferences like Academy of Management, EGOS, EURAM and ISBE. Dr Shahid has won several competitive research grants both at the institutional and international level. He has one of the highest success rates in winning an internal Faculty Initiative Fund (FIF) grant at LUMS, as well as has worked as a Principle Investigator in research projects funded by international agencies like DAAD and Facebook inc. He currently serves as a member of the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Small Business & Entrepreneurship (JSBE) and had been on the Editorial Advisory Board of The Lahore Journal of Business (LJB) and the Journal of Management and Research (JMR) in the past.  

Dr Shahid is also an active case writer, who has authored multiple cases and industry notes in the domain of technology entrepreneurship, new venture creation, SME management and the informal economy. His pedagogical material has been published in Asian Journal of Management Cases and included in the case repositories of Harvard Business School Publishing and the Case Research Unit of LUMS. He has taught courses like Technology Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurship, Principles of Management, Business Model Development, Lean Launchpad and SME Management at both undergraduate and graduate level. He also works very closely with National Incubation Center Lahore (NICL) and conducts extensive trainings and coaching sessions for the start-ups incubated at NICL. He has served as an advisor for multiple start-ups. Prior to his appointment at LUMS, he served as the Head of Management and Organisation Division and the Director of Centre for Entrepreneurship and SMEs (CESME) at the University of Central Punjab, Pakistan from 2011 to 2013.  


Talking of his industrial experience, Dr Shahid is an active member of his family business that goes by the name of Hawks Engineering Services (Pvt) Ltd, where he looks after the quality assurance and production activities since 2011. Hawks Engineering Services is a medium-sized enterprise that specializes in manufacturing sheet-metal spare parts for leading automotive companies in Pakistan, including Toyota, Honda and Suzuki. By the virtue of his family business, Dr Shahid has developed immense expertise in SME management and growth, which greatly harnesses his mentoring and coaching skills for start-ups. In the past, he also co-founded two start-ups by the name of Readalise.com and myGlamfolio.com. Dr Shahid has also executed consulting activities in the domain of entrepreneurship training and pedagogical development for organisations like UNDP and European Union.
